DANC 114F - Introduction to Jazz Dance

Introduction to basic strengthening and stretching exercises and stylistic characteristics of jazz. (Spring Semester)

Course Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of the course, students will be able to
  • Apply core jazz concepts, including syncopation, line and extension, spatiality, polycentric/polyrhythmic movement, and varied energetic qualities, to create and perform original and established choreographic phrases.
  • Demonstrate a developed rhythmic range within the body, responding dynamically to musical structures and improvisation.
  • Analyze and discuss the African roots of jazz dance as a cultural theme expressed through movement.
  • Utilize a full physical kinesphere and demonstrate the ability to shift dynamic and energetic qualities to enhance artistic expression.
  • Develop and express individual creativity, personality, and style through the exploration of complex body patterns.
  • Demonstrate improved performance qualities, including personal expression, spatial awareness, and dynamic projection, in original creative works.
