CHMY 121NL - Introduction to General Chemistry Credit(s): 4
Prerequisite(s): appropriate placement test score on chemistry placement exam, or grade of “B-” or better in CHMY 105 within past two years, or Chemistry Pre-requisite Coordinator consent. As the first semester of an introduction to general, inorganic, organic and biological chemistry, this course covers measurement systems, atomic structure, chemical periodicity, bonding, chemical reactions, acid-base chemistry, electrochemistry, and nuclear chemistry. Laboratory included. (All Semesters)
Course Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of the course, students will be able to
-
Solve chemical problems and evaluate answers, including gas law applications and concentration units, to determine physical plausibility.
-
Apply standard scientific methods and significant figures to measurements, and dimensional analysis with significant figures to calculations.
-
Write the electronic configurations of atoms and ions and correlate them to the periodic table.
-
Identify and differentiate between ionic and covalent bonding, name simple inorganic compounds, and predict their formulas from their names.
-
Draw Lewis structures of chemical species and determine their geometries.
-
Balance chemical equations, classify reactions, and perform basic stoichiometric calculations.
-
Describe chemical kinetics, and apply LéChatelier’s principle to systems in chemical equilibrium.
-
Describe acid/base theory, perform pH calculations, and determine the pH of buffers.
-
Assess oxidation and reduction processes and their application to an electrochemical cell.
-
Describe the particles associated with nuclear chemistry, radioactivity, and use half-life to calculate the age of an object
-
Maintain an accurate laboratory notebook that encompasses data from the entire semester and construct a scientific laboratory report including analytical analysis of the work.
-
Utilize the scientific method to design and critically evaluate an experimental approach to solve an inquiry-based laboratory experiment.
