This course surveys the diversity of music among the world’s peoples. Music systems, instruments and artists representing various indigenous peoples over seven continents are examined through cultural, social, religious, ceremonial, and performance traditions. Students will be introduced to universal musical elements and techniques for active listening. (Spring Semester)
Course Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of the course, students will be able to
- Identify and describe the diverse ways music functions as an art form and a ceremonial or social phenomenon in various global cultures.
- Recognize and identify representative musical styles, genres, and instruments from cultures in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and others.
- Define and apply pertinent musical terms and elements (such as rhythm, melody, harmony, and timbre) to describe and compare diverse musical traditions.
- Develop and apply active listening skills to analyze how music traditions communicate cultural, historical, or social perspectives.
- Examine and discuss the role of music in shaping cultural identity and demonstrate an awareness of oneself as a member of a multicultural, global community.
- Create an original work or presentation (e.g., a research project, performance, or composition) that explores personal or cultural themes by utilizing and integrating techniques or concepts from a studied global music tradition.
