This introductory course provides a comprehensive foundation in the principles of visual communication, starting with an analysis of key historical movements like Bauhaus and the Swiss Style and their lasting impact on contemporary design. Students will learn to apply core aesthetic principles, including hierarchy, balance, and typography, to create original, visually effective layouts that explore personal and cultural themes. Emphasizing layout methodology and utilizing diverse artistic techniques, students will practice digitizing their work using industry-standard software to build a portfolio. (Fall and Spring Semesters)
Course Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of the course, students will be able to
- Identify and analyze key historical movements (e.g., Bauhaus, Swiss Style) and explain their direct influence on contemporary graphic design and communication.
- Analyze and explain how fundamental graphic design principles (e.g., hierarchy, balance, flow) influence and enhance the communication of a message.
- Apply core design principles and aesthetics to create original, visually effective layouts utilizing diverse artistic media and techniques.
- Implement effective layout methodologies and demonstrate proficiency with appropriate digital design tools to organize content.
- Demonstrate foundational knowledge of typography, including classification, hierarchy, and effective use in digital communication.
- Explain the concept of animated time and its application in digital design.
- Create design solutions that effectively express individual creativity or explore personal and cultural themes.
- Offer and receive constructive criticism regarding design work in a professional and clear manner.
