GDSN 149F - Digital Imaging I Credit(s): 3
This is a beginning course in image editing using Photoshop and/or other industry standard photo editing software. This class will introduce the concepts of basic digital image manipulation techniques. This includes cropping images, selecting details, creating new layers, adjusting color balance/contrast, adding type, web optimization, resampling/resizing of images, and using alpha channels. More intermediate topics such as layer mask selection, clipping masks, layer adjustments, filters, and image slicing will be introduced. (Fall Semester)
Course Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of the course, students will be able to
- Analyze and apply design principles: Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of design, including negative/positive space, figure/ground relationships, contrast, repetition, emphasis, value, shape, balance, color, and typography.
- Create unified compositions: Apply elements and principles of composition to create designs that are unified and balanced, demonstrate awareness of negative/positive space, and establish a point of emphasis.
- Demonstrate technical proficiency in Photoshop: Competently work in Photoshop to create a range of original art, photo manipulations, and typography work.
- Manage digital files and resolution: Utilize best practices for file management and demonstrate an understanding of the concept of resolution.
- Apply color theory: Demonstrate the ability to apply basic concepts of color theory, including hue, value, saturation, and color schemes.
- Express narrative through design: Demonstrate an awareness of the potential for color and visual elements to express meaning, narrative, or content within visual art.
- Critique and communicate: Demonstrate familiarity with basic design vocabulary and terminology, and apply this knowledge to offer and receive peer feedback and critique.
- Develop a professional portfolio: Develop a portfolio piece with a series of designs to display artistic and technical abilities.
