ARTZ 231F - Ceramics I


Credit(s): 3

This is an introductory ceramics course which will include the history, development, and aesthetics of ceramic vessels and sculpture. Students will learn basic technical aspects of building clay, working with glazes, and the firing of ceramic objects. Emphasis will be placed on problem solving and the development of ideas. (Fall and Spring Semesters)

Course Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of the course, students will be able to
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the historical, cultural, and aesthetic development of ceramic vessels and sculpture, and examine the role of ceramics as a reflection of culture.
  • Utilize a variety of basic ceramic construction techniques (such as slab, coil, pinch, and wheel-throwing) to create original works.
  • Demonstrate a fundamental understanding of the technical aspects of ceramic processes, including the properties of clay, glaze application, and firing techniques.
  • Develop and apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills to the conceptualization and creation of original artworks.
  • Develop and utilize a critical vocabulary to discuss and analyze personal artwork and the work of peers in a critique setting.
