ARTZ 221F - Painting I

This elementary painting course seeks to acquaint students with the basic tools of the painter, focusing on technique and materials. Each assignment is tailored to both satisfy the need for individual expression and to present a vehicle for the practice of new techniques. (All Semesters)

Course Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of the course, students will be able to
  • Demonstrate facility with painting techniques, including material handling, paint mixing, and application methods.
  • Apply foundational principles of color theory and visual composition to create original paintings.
  • Apply observational skills and painting techniques to a variety of subject matter, such as still life or landscape.
  • Utilize appropriate painting terminology to describe materials and techniques and to critically discuss the formal elements of artworks.
  • Develop a personal methodology or style to effectively express individual creativity and visual language.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of historical or contemporary practices and themes in painting.
