FT 201 - Gun Bluing Credit(s): 3
Prerequisite(s): acceptance into the Firearms Technology program or instructor’s consent. This course presents the chemical processes and procedures used to produce a black oxide finish on firearms or any steel part, except for stainless steel, utilizing the hot caustic immersion and rust bluing processes. Metal preparation, bluing room design, equipment, chemicals, and safety factors will be covered. Polishing techniques and metal preparation utilizing primarily hand techniques will be emphasized. Student skills will be developed by applying these processes to test pieces, tools, and/or project firearms. (Fall Semester)
Course Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of the course, students will be able to
- Prepare metal surfaces for various polished and matte finishes.
- Demonstrate proper use and maintenance of bluing system.
- Demonstrate proficiency in bluing metal parts by producing finished products.
- Reassemble firearms or tools without damaging new bluing, understanding that the industry standard is to deliver the product as new.
