NRSG 256 - Nursing Pathophysiology Credit(s): 3
Prerequisite(s): BIOH 201 , BIOH 211 , CHMY 121 , or instructor consent. This course introduces the student to the basic principles and processes of pathophysiology including cellular communication, genes, and genetic disease; forms of cellular injury, nutrition, fluid and electrolyte/acid base balance; immunity, stress coping and illness, and tumor biology. Pathophysiology of the most common alterations according to body systems will be discussed, as well as the latest developments in research and patient-centered nursing interventions. (All Semesters)
Course Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of the course, students will be able to - Describe the basic principles of cellular communication, genes and genetic disease, forms of cellular injury, fluid and electrolyte/acid base balance, immunity, stress coping and illness, and tumor biology.
- Identify and explain the most common physiological alterations and integrate the knowledge to major body systems.
- Describe the general physiological principles of nutrition and the role of key nutrients in disease processes.
- Discuss the nursing ramifications of caring for people throughout the life span experiencing common physiological alterations.
- Incorporate recent research findings into the comprehensive understanding of disease processes.
