ARTZ 090 - Ceramics Fundamentals Credit(s): 1
This introductory course is designed for students interested in learning the fundamentals of working with clay. Students will be introduced to the basic stages of ceramic production and techniques such as hand-building, wheel throwing, trimming, and glazing. This course can be repeated for a total of five credits. Students receiving financial aid or veterans benefits should check with the Financial Aid office before repeating this course. (Fall and Spring Semesters)
Course Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of the course, students will be able to Apply foundational hand-building and wheel throwing methods to create simple ceramic forms.
Identify and practice safe handling of common ceramics tools, clay bodies, and studio equipment in alignment with safety protocols.
Outline the basic stages of ceramic production-including forming, drying, bisque firing, glazing, and glaze firing-and their impact on the final product.
Utilize introductory surface design methods such as texture, slip decoration, and basic glazing on small-scale ceramic projects.
Evaluate personal and peer work through class discussion or critique, considering visual elements, craftsmanship, and the functional intent of ceramic objects.
