MUSI 106F - Music Theory II Credit(s): 3
Prerequisite(s): MUSI 105 . Corequisite(s): MUSI 141 . This course is a continuation of MUSI 105 , which teaches the fundamentals of music theory (meter, note values, rests, intervals, major scales, circle of fifths, chord construction, minor scales, basic harmonic progression, whole-tone scales and modes). (Spring Semester)
Course Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of the course, students will be able to
- Identify and construct intervals, triads, seventh chords, and tonicization (secondary dominant chords, second leading-tone chords,etc.).
- Analyze harmonic structure, including chord functions and inversions, using Roman numerals and figured bass.
- Identify and analyze melodic/rhythmic structures, embellishing tones, cadences, and phrase relationships.
- Compose original melodies in various metric and tonal (major, minor, modal) frameworks.
- Apply principles of voice leading to compose original music in two, three, and four-part textures.
- Create original compositions (e.g., species counterpoint, phrase units, harmonic sequences) using diverse compositional techniques.
- Examine the role of music and the Arts as a reflection of personal or cultural themes.
