MUSI 101F - Enjoyment of Music

This course traces the development of art music through the past 1000 years. Vocal and instrumental music and composers from the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and 20th century will be examined through listening, reading, and writing. Students will be presented with the analytical and comparative tools to identify and understand the various historical musical eras. (Fall Semester)

Course Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of the course, students will be able to
  • Define pertinent musical terminology and identify foundational elements (e.g., melody, rhythm, harmony, instrumentation) used in Western Art Music.
  • Identify the stylistic features, major composers, and representative works of the primary eras of Western Art Music (Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and 20th/21st Century).
  • Explain how social, cultural, and historical forces influenced the stylistic evolution of Western Art Music.
  • Apply intentional listening techniques to analyze and identify various instrumental and vocal music forms.
  • Create original critical analyses or reflections that compare and evaluate musical works, expressing an individual, informed interpretation of their aesthetic and historical context.
