ITS 274 - Ethical Hacking and Network Defense


Credit(s): 3

Prerequisite(s): ITS 164 .
This course provides students the skills to analyze and defend network and computer resources. The course will combine knowledge and skills from programming, networking, and operating systems and leverage those skills for enumerating and securing networks. An emphasis is placed on scenario-based and exploratory learning. (Intermittently)

Course Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of the course, students will be able to
  • Analyze the mindset of a hacker allowing them to better understand the routes and methods used to penetrate to computer system or network.
  • Identify how hackers exploit vulnerabilities in computer network protocols.
  • Develop custom tools and utilize existing security tools to identify security weakness.
  • Identify specific weaknesses in operating systems and how to exploit the weaknesses.
  • Conduct reconnaissance, gaining access, enumeration, and maintain access to systems.
  • Identify threats and determine the source of the threat.       
  • Develop reports and diagrams to effectively communicate threats and security weaknesses to management.
  • Capture network packets and identifie patterns that may suggest specific threats.
  • Review operating systems accessibility and ensure account enumeration is blocked.
  • Identify social engineering threats.
  • Understand penetration testing and how exploits are delivered.
