BIOO 262NL - Introduction to Entomology Credit(s): 3
Prerequisite(s): any 100-level or above biology course or instructor consent. General biology of insects including principles of morphology, physiology, behavior, ecology, and control. Includes identification of major orders and common families. (Fall and Summer Semesters)
Course Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of the course, students will be able to
- Recognize and give scientific names to the major orders of insects.
- Trace how insects have evolved to adapt to their environments, reproduction, competition, parasites, predators, and pesticides.
- Identify the basic concepts of when and how pest-insect populations are managed.
- Identify the beneficial effects of insects in their role as (for example) pollinators, biological control agents, and research tools in basic biological studies.
- Explain how entomologists (as scientists) objectively test hypotheses about (for example), the adaptive value of insect behaviors or the effectiveness of particular insect control strategies to gain a better understanding of how scientists do their work.
- Engage in discussions about how science gets objective answers to questions.
