SRVY 299 - Capstone Surveying Seminar: Advanced Concepts and Exam Readiness

This seminar-style course delves into advanced topics in land surveying, providing an understanding of specialized practices and essential knowledge for professional land surveyors. Participants explore specific areas of land surveying including FEMA floodplain regulations, Certificate of Subdivision Approval (COSA), ALTA/NSPS standards, and natural resource analysis.  The course is designed to enhance practical skills through discussions of specific real-world applications. (Spring Semester)

Course Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of the course, students will be able to

  • Understand FEMA guidelines for floodplain Letter of Map Amendments and Elevation Certificates.
  • Understand the requirements and regulations for a Certificate of Subdivision Approval (COSA) required by the Sanitation in Subdivisions Act.
  • Understand the requirements and regulations of an ALTA/NSPS Land Title Survey, typically required on commercial property transactions.
  • Evaluate trees, plants, and soil types to better understand classifications in the field.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in previously acquired survey topics and problem-solving techniques necessary to pass the Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) Exam.
  • Introduction to various advanced land survey topics that may be encountered in their future professional career.
