AHMA 201 - Medical Assisting Clinical Procedures I


Credit(s): 4

Prerequisite(s): acceptance into the Medical Assistant program.
This course introduces the clinical aspect of medical assisting. Students will learn the necessary skills to assist health care providers in all aspect of patient care. Includes prepping patients for various exams, vitals, charting, infection control, and medical emergencies. (Fall and Spring Semesters)

Course Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of the course, students will be able to
  • Carry out clinical procedures related to patient care in a clinical practice.
  • Demonstrate proper technique for obtaining vital signs. Accurately perform and chart vital sign measurements.
  • Prepare the patient and exam room for the examination.
  • Assist with routine and specialty examinations.
  • Place patients in the appropriate position in the exam room for the type of exam ordered.
  • Explain procedures to patients while demonstrating sensitivity to patient’s needs, cultural diversity, and level of understanding.
  • Demonstrate skill in standard precautions and safety precautions.
  • Differentiate the concepts of disease transmission and practice medical/surgical asepsis to control the spread of infection.
  • Describe laboratory safety, quality assurance, quality control, and equipment maintenance performed in an outpatient medical office setting.
  • Describe and apply the proper procedures for emergency preparedness and emergencies.
